The Foolish Crocodile and the Clever Monkey

ஒரு நதியில் முதலை தனது துணைவியுடன் வாழ்ந்து வந்தது. நதிக்கரையோரம் ஒரு குரங்கு இருந்தது. முதலையும் குரங்கும் நண்பர்களாக வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர்.

ஒரு நாள் பெண் முதலை ஆண் முதலையிடம் தன் ஆசையை தெரிவித்தது. எனக்கு ரொம்ப நாளாக குரங்கின் இதயத்தை சாப்பிட வேண்டுமென்று ஆசை! தங்களால் கொண்டுவரமுடியுமா? என கேட்டது.

ஆண்முதலை யோசித்தது என்ன செய்வதென்று! திடீரென ஒரு யோசனை வந்தது, சரி நான் கொண்டுவருகிறேன் என சம்மதித்தது. நம் குரங்கு நண்பனை வீட்டிற்கு விருந்துக்கு அழைப்போம். அவனும் வருவான் கொன்று அவன் இதயத்தை சாப்பிடு என கூறியது. பெண் முதலைக்கோ சந்தோசம்…!

அடுத்த நாள் ஆண் முதலை குரங்கு நண்பனை விருந்துக்கு அழைத்தது. குரங்கும் சம்மதித்தது முதலையின் முதுகில் ஏறி அமர்ந்ததும் முதலை புறப்பட்டது.

நடு ஆற்றில் சென்றுகொண்டிருக்கும் பொது ஆண் முதலை கூறியது “ஏன் இப்போது என் வீட்டிற்கு போகிறோமென்று தெரியுமா?” என கேட்டது.

அப்பாவி குரங்கு விருந்துக்கு தானே என கூறியது.

முதலை சொன்னது, அதுதான் இல்லை என்னோட மனைவி குரங்கின் இதயம் சாப்பிட ஆசைப்பட்டாள், அதுக்காக தான் உன்னை கூட்டிக் கொண்டு போகிறேன் என கூறியது.

சற்று குரங்கிற்கு அதிர்ச்சியாக இருந்தது.

சற்று யோசித்த குரங்கு… அடடா என்ன நண்பா இதை முன்னாடியே சொல்லகூடாதா? நேற்று தான் என் இதயத்தை எடுத்து காயபோட்டேன் அது அங்கேயே இருக்கிறது என கூற

முதலையும் அப்படியா வா திரும்பி போய் எடுத்துகொண்டு வருவோம் என்று மீண்டும் கரைக்கு வந்து விட்டது. தப்பித்த குரங்கு முதலையிடம் கூறியது…! முட்டாள் முதலையே நீயெல்லாம் ஒரு நண்பனா? என்னையே கொல்லப் பார்க்கிறாயா என சொல்லி விட்டு மரத்தின் மேல் ஏறி சென்றுவிட்டது.

Once upon a time, a crocodile lived in a river with his wife. On the riverbank, there lived a monkey. The crocodile and the monkey became good friends and lived happily.

One day, the female crocodile expressed her desire to her husband. “I’ve been craving the monkey’s heart for a long time! Can you bring it for me?” she asked.

The male crocodile was puzzled—what should he do? Suddenly, he came up with an idea and said, “Alright, I’ll bring it.” He told her, “Let’s invite our monkey friend home for a meal. He will come, and then you can eat his heart.” The female crocodile was thrilled!

The next day, the crocodile invited the monkey to their home. The monkey agreed, climbed onto the crocodile’s back, and off they went.

While they were in the middle of the river, the crocodile said, “Do you know why we are going to my home?”

The innocent monkey replied, “Isn’t it for a meal?”

The crocodile said, “Actually, no. My wife desires to eat your heart. That’s why I’m taking you.”

The monkey was shocked for a moment.

Then he thought quickly and said, “Oh dear friend, you should’ve told me earlier! Just yesterday, I removed my heart and left it to dry on the tree. It’s not with me now.”

The crocodile said, “Really? Then let’s go back and get it.”

The monkey and the crocodile returned to the shore. Once there, the monkey jumped off the crocodile’s back and climbed up a tree. He said:

“You foolish crocodile! Are you even a friend? You tried to kill me?”

And the monkey stayed safe atop the tree.
