The remarkable phenomenon has attracted attention for its unusual shape and its potential to affect space weather.

This opening in the Sun’s outer layers is called a coronal hole. In these areas, the Sun’s magnetic fields open up, allowing solar wind to escape into space. Solar wind from the hole will reach Earth by September 14, which could cause geomagnetic storms, NASA said.
