இந்து சமயத்தில் மிக முக்கியமான, மகிழ்ச்சியூட்டும் மற்றும் ஆன்மீக அர்த்தமிக்க திருநாளாகக் கருதப்படுவது தீபாவளி (Deepavali) ஆகும்.
“தீபம்” என்பது ஒளி என்றும், “ஆவளி” என்பது வரிசை என்றும் பொருள். எனவே “தீபாவளி” என்றால் “ஒளியின் வரிசை” எனப் பொருள்படும்.

மற்றொரு புராணக் கதையில், நரகாசுரன் எனும் அசுரன் மனிதர்களுக்கு துன்பம் விளைவித்தான். அவனை ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணனும் சத்தியபாமையும் இணைந்து அழித்த நாள் நரகசதுர்த்தசி எனப்படுகிறது. இது “அறிவு அறியாமையை வெல்லும்” என்ற தத்துவத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.
