Gen Z Avoiding Love: Shocking Findings from a New Study
A recent study has revealed that members of Generation Z — those born between 1997 and 2012 — are currently living under intense financial pressure.
Rising inflation, skyrocketing rent, student loan burdens, and job insecurity have all contributed to severe economic challenges for this generation.
As a result, their romantic relationships have been significantly affected, according to a report titled “The Cuffing Economy” released by the financial technology company Intuit.
The report states that one in three Gen Z individuals admits to meeting friends mainly for free meals — a trend humorously dubbed as “Foodie Calls.”
Furthermore, 58% of Gen Z respondents said they have completely avoided romantic relationships due to financial stress.
Among Millennials (those born in the 1980s and 1990s), the figure stands slightly lower at 51%.
The study also found that one in five Gen Zers have avoided dating altogether as a way to save money.
This phenomenon has even sparked humorous discussions and viral videos on social media platforms, particularly on TikTok.
For instance, British singer Chiara King joked,
“Even if someone isn’t great, I’d still go on a date — at least I get a free dinner.”
Similarly, one university student confessed to attending 16 dinner dates simply because she couldn’t afford to pay her tuition fees.
Commenting on this trend, mental health counselor and financial expert Aja Evans said:
“Many people who go on dates just for free food are already struggling financially. For them, it’s both a coping mechanism and an emotional outlet.”
Overall, the study notes that while Gen Z tends to be more open than previous generations about discussing income, expenses, and debt, this transparency may also lead to new emotional challenges for some individuals.
