இலங்கையிலேயே அதிகமான சிக்குன்குனியா நோயாளிகள் மேல் மாகாண பிரதேசத்தில் தான் பதிவாகியுள்ளதென சுகாதார அதிகாரிகளால் வெளியிடப்பட்ட அதிகாரபூர்வ தரவுகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.
இந்த ஆண்டு ஜனவரி மாதத்திலிருந்து இலங்கை முழுவதும் பதிவான மொத்த 16,544 நோயாளர்களின் 7,611 நோயாளர்கள் மேல் மாகாணத்தில் மட்டுமே பதிவாகியுள்ளனர்.
மேல் மாகாணத்தில் உள்ள மாவட்டங்களில், கொழும்பு மாவட்டம் 2,709 நோயாளர்களுடன் மிக அதிக எண்ணிக்கையில் பாதிப்பை சந்தித்துள்ளது. அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து கம்பஹா மாவட்டத்தில் 2,453 மற்றும் களுத்துறை மாவட்டத்தில் 567 நோயாளிகள் பதிவாகியுள்ளனர்.
இந்நிலையைப் பற்றி கருத்து தெரிவித்த மேல் மாகாண ஆளுநர் ஹனீஃப் யூசுப், “சிக்குன்குனியா நோயின் பரவலை கட்டுப்படுத்துவதற்கான அனைத்து நடவடிக்கைகளும் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வருகின்றன,” என கூறினார்.
மேலும், சிக்குன்குனியாவுக்கு எதிரான நடவடிக்கைகள், ஏப்ரல் மாதத்தில் மட்டும் 18 தடுப்பு நிகழ்ச்சிகள் மேல் மாகாணத்தில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டதாகவும் அவர் கூறினார்.

Chikungunya Outbreak in Sri Lanka
According to official data released by health authorities, the highest number of Chikungunya cases in Sri Lanka has been reported from the Western Province.
Out of a total of 16,544 cases recorded across the country since January this year, 7,611 cases were reported solely from the Western Province, making it the worst-affected region in the nation.
Among the districts within the province, Colombo District was the most severely hit, with 2,709 reported cases. Gampaha District followed with 2,453 cases, and Kalutara District recorded 567 cases.
Commenting on the current situation, Western Province Governor Hanif Yusuf said, “All necessary steps are being taken to control the spread of Chikungunya.” He further emphasized that both provincial and regional health authorities are working in close coordination to implement rapid response strategies to address the outbreak.
One of the key response measures includes widespread fogging operations using drone technology to target mosquito breeding grounds efficiently. This innovative method allows for greater coverage in densely populated urban areas and hard-to-reach locations, enhancing the effectiveness of the campaign.
In addition, Governor Yusuf mentioned that 18 anti-Chikungunya prevention programs were conducted in the Western Province during the month of April alone. These programs included awareness campaigns for the public, mosquito breeding site inspections, cleanup drives, and distribution of mosquito nets and repellents.
Health officials continue to urge the public to remain vigilant, eliminate stagnant water around their homes, and seek immediate medical attention if Chikungunya symptoms such as fever, joint pain, and rash appear.
With the monsoon season approaching, experts warn that conditions could further favor mosquito breeding, and therefore, proactive community participation is vital in supporting the authorities’ efforts to contain the disease and prevent further spread.
