யானைகளின் பாதையை கண்காணிக்கும் ரெயில்வே துறை – பாதுகாப்புக்கான புதிய முயற்சி

வனவிலங்கு பாதுகாப்பு திணைக்களம், நாட்டிலுள்ள 142 ரெயில்வே நிலையங்களுக்கு அருகே காட்டு யானைகள் உலவுகின்றன என்பதை அடையாளம் கண்டுள்ளது.

இந்த தகவல், கிரித்தலே தேசிய வனவிலங்கு பயிற்சி மற்றும் ஆராய்ச்சி மையத்தில் நடைபெற்ற இரு நாள் ஆய்வுக்குப் பிறகு வெளியாகியுள்ளது.

இந்த ஆய்வானது ரெயில்வே துறையினரான ரெயில்வே ஓட்டுநர்கள் மற்றும் அதிகாரிகளுக்கு காட்டு யானைகளுடன் புகையிரதங்கள் மோதுவதைத் தடுக்கும் முறைகளை பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தும் நோக்கத்துடன் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது .

இலங்கையில் மனிதர்கள் மற்றும் யானைகளுக்கு இடையிலான விபத்துக்கான முதன்மை காரணம் யானைகளின் வாழ்விட இழப்பு என ஆய்வாளர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர். இது மேம்பாட்டு திட்டங்கள், வன அழிப்பு மற்றும் நில பயன்பாட்டு மாற்றங்கள் காரணமாக ஏற்படுகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும், புகையிரதங்கள் மோதல், சட்டவிரோத மின்கம்பிகள், துப்பாக்கிச் சுடுதல் மற்றும் நீர் நிலைகளில் மூழ்கி மடிதல் போன்ற காரணங்களால் அதிகமான எண்ணிக்கையிலான யானைகள் உயிரிழக்கின்றன.

கல் ஓயா முதல் மின்னேரியா வரையிலான புகையிரத பாதை, கொண்டுள்ள மற்றும் மின்னேரியா தேசிய பூங்காக்களை கடக்கும் என்பதாலும், மஹாஒயா முதல் கல் ஓயா வரையிலான பாதையிலும் பல யானை கடக்கும் இடங்கள் உள்ளதாலும், இப்பாதைகளுக்கு சிறப்பு கவனம் செலுத்தப்பட்டது.

இதற்கிடையில், இந்த புகையிரத பாதைகளின் அருகே உள்ள யானைகளின் பருவகால இயக்கத்தை பற்றிய விரிவான ஆய்வை மேற்கொள்ள அதிகாரிகள் தீர்மானித்தனர். மேலும், தொழில்நுட்பத்தின் உதவியுடன் யானை மற்றும் புகையிரதங்கள் மோதல்களை குறைக்கும் புதிய தீர்வுகளைப் பயன்படுத்துவது மற்றும் வனவிலங்குகளும் பயணிகளும் பாதுகாப்பாக இருக்க நடவடிக்கைகள் குறித்து இந்தக் ஆய்வில் ஆராயப்பட்டது.

Railways Monitor Elephant Movement – A New Initiative for Safety

The Department of Wildlife Conservation has identified the presence of wild elephants near 142 railway stations across the country.

This information was revealed following a two-day study conducted at the Giritale National Wildlife Training and Research Center.

The study was aimed at raising awareness among railway personnel, including train drivers and officials, about methods to prevent train-elephant collisions.

Researchers stated that the primary cause of accidents between humans and elephants in Sri Lanka is the loss of elephant habitats. This habitat loss is attributed to development projects, deforestation, and changes in land use patterns. Every year, a significant number of elephants die due to train collisions, illegal electric fences, gunshots, and drowning in water bodies.

Special attention was given to the railway track stretching from Kal-Oya to Minneriya, which passes through the Kaudulla and Minneriya National Parks. Similarly, the track from Maha Oya to Kal-Oya also includes several locations frequented by elephants.

Meanwhile, authorities have decided to conduct a detailed study on the seasonal movement patterns of elephants near these railway tracks. The study also explored the use of technological solutions to reduce elephant-train collisions and emphasized measures to ensure the safety of both wildlife and passengers.
