Foreign media report that the UK House of Lords has expressed support for a proposal to ban children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms.
The amendment, introduced under the government’s Schools Bill, received 261 votes in favour and 150 votes against.
Several studies have found that social media use contributes to mental health issues among young people, promotes extremist radicalisation, and causes distraction in classrooms.
Former minister Lord Nash, describing the situation as a “social catastrophe,” argued that the ban is necessary to give teenagers time and space until they reach maturity.
If the amendment becomes law, social media companies will be required to implement “highly effective” age-verification systems.
However, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government has stated that it intends to defeat this amendment in the House of Commons.
Instead of imposing an immediate ban, the government has decided to conduct a three-month consultation process to gather scientific evidence.
Some charities have warned that the ban could have unintended negative consequences. They fear that restricting access to mainstream social media platforms may push children towards unregulated and potentially dangerous websites.
Labour peer Lord Knight has also expressed concern that children could lose the positive benefits of social media, such as educational opportunities and social interaction.
Recently, Australia imposed a ban on under-16s using 10 major social media platforms.
It is noteworthy that political pressure in the UK has increased following this Australian precedent.
