New Low-Pressure System: Heavy Rain Expected in the North and East
A warning has been issued that the low-pressure area currently prevailing over the Bay of Bengal, southeast of Sri Lanka, is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours.
It is expected to move westwards and northwestwards and reach Sri Lanka’s eastern coast.
As a result, the Department of Meteorology has announced that rainfall is likely to increase from today in the Northern, North Central, Eastern, Uva and Central Provinces.
In addition, heavy rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres is forecast in parts of the Uva Province and in the districts of Batticaloa, Ampara, Polonnaruwa and Matale.
Strong winds with speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour may occur at times in the hill country as well as in the Northern, North Central, North Western and Eastern Provinces, and in the districts of Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo and Monaragala.
Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued Red Landslide Risk Warnings for several areas in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Furthermore, Level One Landslide Warnings have been issued for the Badulla, Matale and Monaragala districts, according to NBRO geologist Vasantha Senadeera.
