உலகம் முழுவதும் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் 400 மில்லியன் Plastic Disaster – A Threat to Future Generations டன்னுக்கும் அதிகமான பிளாஸ்டிக் உற்பத்தி செய்யப்படுவதாக சுற்றுச்சூழல் அமைச்சர் கலாநிதி தம்மிக பட்டபெந்தி தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
இந்த பிளாஸ்டிக் உற்பத்தி சுற்றுச்சூழல் மாசுபாட்டிற்கு மட்டுமல்லாது, பொருளாதாரம், சுகாதாரம் மற்றும் எதிர்கால சந்ததியினருக்கும் கடுமையான தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது என அவர் குறிப்பிட்டார்.
பத்தரமுல்லையிலுள்ள ‘வோட்டர்ஸ் எட்ஜ்’ (Water’s Edge) வளாகத்தில் 11.11.2025 நடைபெற்ற நிகழ்வொன்றில் கலந்து கொண்டு உரையாற்றியபோது அமைச்சர் இதனை தெரிவித்தார்.
பிளாஸ்டிக் மாசுபாட்டைக் கட்டுப்படுத்த இலங்கை அரசாங்கம் முறையான மற்றும் துரிதமான பல நடவடிக்கைகளை எடுத்து வருகிறது. ஏற்கனவே ஒருமுறை பயன்படுத்தும் பிளாஸ்டிக் பொருட்களுக்கு (Single-Use Plastics) தடை விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
இது “தூய்மையான பசுமை இலங்கை” ஒன்றை உருவாக்குவதற்கான அரசின் உறுதிப்பாட்டின் ஒரு பகுதியாகும் என அமைச்சர் தெரிவித்தார்.
சட்டங்கள் மட்டும் போதுமானவை அல்ல; அரசாங்கத்தின் பசுமைக் கொள்கைகளுக்கு மக்களின் ஆதரவு கிடைக்கும் போதுதான் உண்மையான மாற்றம் ஏற்படும் என அவர் சுட்டிக்காட்டினார்.
மேலும், தற்போது அரசாங்கம் தேசிய கழிவு மேலாண்மை செயற்திட்டம் (National Waste Management Action Plan) ஒன்றை நடைமுறைப்படுத்தி வருவதாகவும், அதனுடன் தொடர்புடைய திட மற்றும் தொழில்துறை கழிவு மேலாண்மை குறித்த புதிய அமைச்சரவை ஆவணத்திற்கு அனுமதி பெறும் நடவடிக்கைகளும் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும் அமைச்சர் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

Plastic Disaster – A Threat to Future Generations
Environment Minister Dr. Thammika Patabendige has stated that more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide every year.
He pointed out that this massive plastic production not only causes environmental pollution but also poses serious threats to the economy, public health, and future generations.
The Minister made these remarks while addressing an event held today (11) at the ‘Water’s Edge’ premises in Battaramulla.
He further noted that the Sri Lankan government is taking systematic and swift measures to control plastic pollution. Already, a ban has been imposed on single-use plastic products.
This, he said, is part of the government’s commitment to creating a “Clean and Green Sri Lanka.”
He emphasized that laws alone are not sufficient; real change can only occur when the public supports the government’s green policies.
The Minister also mentioned that the government is currently implementing a National Waste Management Action Plan, and steps have been taken to obtain Cabinet approval for a new document related to solid and industrial waste management.
