கிழக்கின் முதல் கல்வியியல் பேராசிரியராக அறியப்பட்ட மா. செல்வராஜா தனது 77 ஆவது வயதில் நேற்று முன்தினம் (27.07.2025) ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை அன்று காலமானார்.
மட்டக்களப்பு முனைக்காடு எனும் பிரதேசத்தில் 1948ஆம் ஆண்டு ஐப்பசி மாதம் 14 ஆம் திகதி மானாகப்போடி தம்பதிக்கு மூத்த மகனாக பிறந்த இவர் தனது ஆரம்பக் கல்வியினை மட்/தாழங்குடா பாடசாலையில் கற்று உயர்தரகல்வியினை கல்லடி சிவானந்தா வித்தியாலயத்தில் கற்று பல்கலைக்கழகத்திற்கு நுழைந்து பல பட்டங்களையும் பதவிகளையும் தன்னிலைப் படுத்தி கிழக்கு மாகாணத்தின் தவிர்க்கமுடியாத கல்வி சக்தியாக திகழ்ந்தவர் எனலாம்.
குறிப்பாக பேராதனைப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கல்வியியலில் விசேட இளமாணிப் பட்டம், கொழும்புப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கல்வியியலில் முதுமாணிப் பட்டம், பிரித்தானிய லீட்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கல்வி முதுமாணிப் பட்டம் என பல கல்விசார் பட்டங்களைப் பெற்றார்.
குறிப்பாக 1978/11/24 அன்று ஏற்பட்ட சுறாவளியால் படுவான் பெருநிலத்தின் கல்வித் துறையும் ஸ்திரத் தன்மையிழந்து ஆட்டம் கண்டது. இக் காலகட்டத்தில் 30 வயது நிரம்பிய துடுப்புள்ள இளம் ஆசிரியராக வலம் வந்த பேராசான் செல்வராஜா அவர்கள் படுவான் கல்வித் துறைக்கு ஒளியூட்டி உயிரூட்டும் எண்ணத்துடன் ஒளிக் கல்லூரியினை முனைக்காடு கிராமத்தில் 1978 இல் ஸ்தாபித்து வயது வித்தியாசமின்றி கல்வி ஆர்வமுள்ள சகல வயதுப் பிரிவினருக்கும் கல்வித் தாகம் தீர்க்க அல்லும் பகலும் பாடுபட்டு உழைத்தார். பலரது கல்வி வளர்ச்சிக்கும் ஊன்றுதலாய் இருந்தார் பிற்காலத்தில் இவரது ஒளிக்கல்லுரியில் கல்வி கற்றோர் பலர் கல்வித் துறையில் உயரிய பதவிகளில் பணியாற்றினர்.
இவர் ஒளிக்கல்லூரியில் தனது மாணவர்களை கொண்டு ஏனையோருக்கும் கல்வியினை புகட்டினார் ஒளிக்கல்லூரிக்கு வரமுடியாத போக்குவரத்து பிரச்சனை உள்ள மாணவர்களுக்கு கல்வி புகட்ட அவர்களது கிராமங்களுக்கு துவிச்சக்கரவண்டியில் சென்று கல்வி புகட்டி இன்றும் படுவான் மக்கள் மனதிலிருக்கும் அம் மக்களால் போற்றப்படும் ஒரு மனிதராக திகழ்கின்றார்.
ஆசிரியராக, அதிபராக, விரிவுரையாளராக, பேராசிரியராக, பல்கலைக்கழக வேந்தராக உயர்வடைந்த ஒரு பேராசான் மா.செல்வராஜா ஐயா அவர்கள் கல்வியியல் துறையிலே தேசிய கல்வி நிறுவகத்தில் செயற்திட்ட அதிகாரியாக பின் தேசிய கல்வி நிறுவக பணிப்பாளராக கடமையாற்றிய பேராசிரியர் செல்வராஜா அவர்கள் கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் இஸ்லாமிய கற்கைகள் துறைத் தலைவராகவும் கல்வி, பிள்ளைநல துறைத் தலைவராகவும் கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழத்தின் வேந்தராகவும் கடமையாற்றியிருந்தார்.
பேராசிரியர் அவர்கள் ஐக்கிய அமெரிக்கா, தாய்லாந்து, பிலிப்பைன்ஸ், இஸ்ரேல் என பல நாடுகளுக்குச் சென்று கல்விசார் பயிற்சிகளைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டதுடன் கல்விசார் தலைப்பில் பல நூல்களையும் பல சஞ்சிகைகளில் கட்டுரைகளையும் எழுதியுள்ளதோடு பல ஆய்வறிக்கைகளையும் எழுதி வெளியிட்டுள்ளார்.
கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் உயர்சிக்காக அளப்பெரிய சேவையினை ஆற்றிய பேராசியர் அவர்கள் கிழக்கு பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கலை இளமாணியில் (BA) கல்வியியலை ஒரு பாடமாகவும் கல்வியியலில் இளமாணி (BEd), முதுமாணி (MEd) போன்ற சிறப்புத் துறைகளையும் தோற்றுவித்து அதனை முன்னெடுத்துச் சென்றார். கொழும்புப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்திற்கு அடுத்ததாக தமிழ் மொழிமூலம் கல்விமாணிக் கற்கைநெறி கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்திலே முன்னெடுக்கப்படுகின்றமை சுட்டிக்காட்டத் தக்கது.
முனைக்காடு எனும் கிராமத்திலே பிறந்து இலங்கையில் கல்வித் துறையில் தனிப் பெரும் ஆளுமையாக திகழ்ந்து பலரது கல்விக்கு உறுதுணையாக இருந்து பல கல்வியலாளர்களை உருவாக்கிய பேராசிரியர் மா. செல்வராஜா விவேகாந்தா தொழில்நுட்ப கல்லூரியின் செயற்பாடுகளுக்கு ஆலோசனையும் ஆதரவும் வழங்கி அளப்பெரும் சேவையாற்றினார்.
இவரது இழப்பு கிழக்கு கல்வித் துறைக்கு பேரிழப்பாக அமைந்துள்ளது.

Selvarajah, the first professor of education in the East, passes away
Known as the first professor of education in the East, Ma. Selvarajah passed away on Sunday (27.07.2025) at the age of 77.
Born on 14th Aippasi in 1948 in the area of Munaikadu, Batticaloa, as the eldest son of the Manakapodi couple, he received his primary education at the Mad/Thalanguda School, completed his higher education at the Sivananda Vidyalaya in Kallady, entered the university and established himself with many degrees and positions, becoming an indispensable educational force in the Eastern Province.
In particular, he received several academic degrees, including a special bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Peradeniya, a master’s degree in education from the University of Colombo, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Leeds, UK.
Especially due to the cyclone that struck on 11/24/1978, the education sector of the Paduan mainland was also unstable and shaken. During this period, Perachan Selvarajah, who was a young teacher of 30 years old, established the Light College in the village of Naukkadu in 1978 with the intention of bringing light and vitality to the Paduan education sector and worked tirelessly to quench the thirst for education for all age groups regardless of age. He was also a pillar of the educational development of many. Later, many of the students who studied at his Light College went on to hold high positions in the education sector.
He brought his students to the Light College to educate others. He went to their villages on a tricycle to educate students who had transportation problems and could not reach the Light College. He is still a man who is admired by the people of Paduwan today.
A professor who rose to the rank of teacher, principal, lecturer, professor, and university chancellor, Professor Selvarajah served as a project officer at the National Institute of Education and later as the Director of the National Institute of Education in the field of education. Professor Selvarajah served as the Head of the Department of Islamic Studies at the Eastern University, the Head of the Department of Education and Child Welfare, and the Chancellor of the Eastern University.
The professor traveled to many countries such as the United States, Thailand, the Philippines, and Israel to receive educational training and has written many books on educational topics, articles in many magazines, and has written and published many research papers.
The professor, who rendered immense service to the higher education of the Eastern University, introduced Education as a subject in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and also introduced special departments such as Bachelor of Education (BEd) and Master of Education (MEd) in the Eastern University and promoted it. It is worth noting that the Tamil medium education course is being conducted at the Eastern University, after the University of Colombo.
Born in the village of Nayakkadu, Professor M. Selvarajah, who was a unique personality in the field of education in Sri Lanka and who supported the education of many and produced many educationists, provided immense service by advising and supporting the activities of the Vivekananda College of Technology.
His loss is a great loss to the Eastern education sector.
