சித்திரைப் புத்தாண்டை முன்னிட்டு நிவாரண விலையில் உணவுப் பொதிகளை வழங்கும் அரசாங்க திட்டத்தை தேர்தல் ஆணைக்குழு தற்காலிகமாக நிறுத்தி வைக்க அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளது. உள்ளூராட்சி மன்றத் தேர்தலுக்குப் பிறகு மட்டுமே இந்த திட்டத்தை மேற்கொள்ள அரசாங்கத்துக்கு அனுமதி வழங்கப்படும் என ஜனாதிபதியின் செயலாளர் மற்றும் வர்த்தக, வாணிப, உணவுப் பாதுகாப்பு மற்றும் கூட்டுறவு அபிவிருத்தி அமைச்சின் செயலாளருக்கு எழுத்துப்பூர்வமாக தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
இவ்வருட வரவு செலவு திட்டத்தின் கீழ், அஸ்வெசும நலன்புரி உதவிகளுக்காக புதியதாக விண்ணப்பித்த 812,753 பேரில் தகுதியான பயனாளிகளுக்கு ரூ.5,000 பெறுமதியான அத்தியாவசிய உணவுப் பொதியை ரூ.2,500 என்ற நிவாரண விலையில் வழங்க அரசாங்கம் திட்டமிட்டிருந்தது.
இந்த திட்டத்திற்கு சமீபத்தில் அமைச்சரவையின் அனுமதியும் கிடைத்திருந்தது. மேலும், ஏப்ரல் 1 முதல் 13 வரை இந்த உணவுப் பொதிகளை லங்கா சதோச மற்றும் கூட்டுறவு விற்பனை நிலையங்கள் மூலம் விநியோகிக்க திட்டமிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Government Relief Food Package Scheme Temporarily Suspended
In connection with the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year , the government had planned to distribute essential food packages at subsidized rates as a special relief measure. However, the Election Commission has issued instructions to temporarily suspend this initiative. The directive has been formally communicated in writing to the Secretary to the President and the Secretary to the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development.
The commission stated that this scheme can only proceed after the conclusion of the local government elections. This move aligns with standard election protocols to ensure government welfare schemes are not used to influence public opinion or voting behavior during election periods.
Under the current year’s national budget proposal, the government had planned to offer food packages worth Rs. 5,000 at a relief price of Rs. 2,500 to eligible low-income families. These recipients were selected from among 812,753 new applicants to the Aswesuma welfare benefit scheme, who had recently registered for assistance. Those who met the criteria were scheduled to benefit from this seasonal support initiative.
The Cabinet of Ministers had already granted approval for the program, with arrangements in place to carry out distribution between April 1 and April 13. The food packages were to be delivered via Lanka Sathosa outlets and cooperative sales centers island-wide, ensuring wide accessibility for the targeted beneficiaries.
This relief measure was not only aimed at offering festive support during the New Year celebrations, but also intended to mitigate the ongoing cost-of-living crisis affecting low-income families. Over the past months, rising food prices and economic instability have placed additional pressure on vulnerable households, making schemes like this vital for short-term relief.
Although the temporary suspension may cause disappointment among intended recipients, the government has assured that the program will resume immediately after the election process is completed. All necessary groundwork, including the procurement of goods and logistical arrangements, remains intact, ensuring swift implementation when permitted.
Authorities have also emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness, asking the public to remain informed and patient. The Election Commission’s move reinforces democratic principles by safeguarding the neutrality of state welfare mechanisms during politically sensitive periods.
