இலங்கையில் ஆண்டுதோறும் நடைபெறும் மிகப் பெரிய ஆன்மீக நிகழ்வுகளில் ஒன்றாக விளங்கும் கதிர்காம பாத யாத்திரை(Spiritual Journey), அசாதாரணமான ஒரு அனுபவமாகவும், மனிதநேயத்தின் மிகச்சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டாகவும் திகழ்கிறது. இது ஒரு வழக்கமான பயணம் அல்ல; உடலையும் மனதையும் ஒருங்கிணைக்கும், துயரங்களையும் பாகுபாடுகளையும் கடந்து, இறைநம்பிக்கையுடன் மனிதர்கள் ஒன்றுபடும் ஒரு ஆன்மிகப் பாதை உகந்தை முருகனின் அழைப்பில் ஆரம்பம்…


யாழ்ப்பாணம், திருகோணமலை, மட்டக்களப்பு என பல்வேறு இடங்களில் இருந்து பாதயாத்திரையினை பலர் மேற்கொண்டாலும், அனேகமானவர்களின் பாத யாத்திரை உகந்தை முருகன் ஆலயத்திலிருந்துதான் ஆரம்பிக்கப்படுகிறது.
உகந்தை, மட்டக்களப்பு மாவட்டத்தின் தெற்குப் பகுதியில், கிழக்கு கடற்கரையின் அழகான பாலைவனத்திலும் கடல்கரையிலும் அமைந்துள்ள இடம். உகந்தை என்ற பெயர் தான் ‘உகந்த இடம்’ என்றும், இந்த இடத்திலே முருகன் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் அமர்ந்தார் என்றும் புராணங்கள் கூறுகின்றன. உகந்தை முருகன் கோயிலுக்கு வந்த பக்தர்கள் அங்கு முருகனை வணங்கி, நடைபயணத்தைத் தொடங்குகிறார்கள். மீனாட்சியம்மை சமேத சுப்பிரமணியர் ஆலயம் எனும் இக்கோயில், வனப்பகுதியின் மத்தியில் அமைந்துள்ளதால் இயற்கையின் மடியில் அமைந்த ஒரு தவமாடும் இடமாகவும் இருக்கிறது.

பாதையிலும் பக்தியிலும் ஒளிரும் மனிதநேயம்


பல்லாயிரம் மக்கள் முருகனை நினைத்து பய பக்தியுடன் யாத்திரை செல்கின்றனர். பலர் நேர்த்திக்கடன்களை நிறைவேற்றவும், சிலர் பொழுது போக்காகவும், சிலர் சாகச பயணமாகவும் (Adventure) இந்த காட்டு வழியான நடைபயண யாத்திரையினை தொடர்கின்றனர். இவ்வாறு பல்வேறு விதங்களில் பல்வேறு நோக்கங்களில் இந்த யாத்திரையை மேற்கொள்பவர்களை காணக்கிடைத்தது.
என்னதான் நோக்கம் என்றாலும் ஆபத்தான இந்த காட்டுவழியில் ஒரு சக்தி தங்களை காக்கின்றது என்ற உணர்வுடன் அனைவரும் “அரோகரா” என்றும் “முருகா” என்றும் தங்கள் உணர்வுகளை வெளிப்படுத்தும் பக்தியினையும் இங்கு காண்கின்றோம். ஒவ்வொருவரையும் “சாமி” என்று அழைக்கும் இந்த மரபு இறைவனை அங்கும் இங்கும் தேடாதீர்கள் உங்கள் முன் நிற்கின்ற அனைத்து மனிதர்களும், உயிர்களும் இறைசக்தி என்ற அந்த உண்மையினை உணர்த்தி நிற்கின்றது. இனம், மதம், ஜாதி, குலம், கோத்திரம் என்ற எந்த பாகுபாடும் இல்லாத ஒரு நிலையை இங்கு காண முடியும் உயர்ந்தவன், தாழ்ந்தவன், ஏழை, பணக்காரன் என்ற நிலை கடந்து அனைவரும் ஒரே நிலையில் இங்கு ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் பாதுகாப்பான உணர்வுடனே பயணித்தனர். யார் எது கொடுத்தாலும் எந்த பாகுபாடும் பார்க்காமல் அது இறைவன் கொடுக்கின்றான் என்ற உணர்வுடன் பகிர்ந்துண்பதும், உதவுவதுமாக சமரசம் உலாவும் பயணமாகவே இந்த பயணம் அமைகின்றது.

கால்களின் வலிகளும், உடல்களின் முடியாமையும், வயதுகளின் இயலாமை, உடல் களைப்பு, வயிறுப் பசி என்று பாராமல் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் ஒவ்வொருவர் சந்தர்ப்பத்திற்கு ஏற்ற வகையில் உதவி வழங்கி இந்த காட்டுப் பயணத்திலே செல்லும் போது மனித வாழ்க்கையின் தத்துவமும், மனிதநேயமும், உறவுகளின் உன்னதமும் இங்கு காணமுடிந்தது. ஒற்றையடி பாதைகளும், அடர்ந்த காடுகளும், மரங்களில்லா வெட்டை வெளிகளும், சேத்து நிலங்கள், மணல் பாதைகள், பாய்ந்தோடும் ஆறுகள், சேற்றுக்களிகளின் மேலான நீர்நிலைகள் என அனைத்து விதமான பகுதிகளையும் கால்நடையாக கடந்து போவதுடன், கொடிய விலங்குகள், விஷ ஜந்துக்கள் என்று பல ஆபத்துக்களை தாண்டிச் செல்லும் போது ஏதோ ஒரு சக்தி எம்மை காப்பாற்றும் என்ற அந்த உள்ளுணர்வு நம்பிக்கை “அரோகரா முருகா” என்று அனைவர் வாய்களிலிருந்தும் வெளிப்பட்டது.
காட்டுவழிகளிடையே பாலப்பழம், வீரப்பழம் விளாம்பழம் என்று பல்வேறு வகையான பாழங்களை பறித்து சுவைத்து அனைவருக்கும் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டு செல்லும் அற்புதம் இந்த பாதயாத்திரையில் காணக் கிடைத்தது. கையில் இருக்கும் பொருட்களையும், கிடைத்த வளங்களையும் வைத்து ஒன்றாக சமைத்து பரிமாரி உணவினை உண்டு அலுவலக, வீட்டு நெருக்கடிகள் இன்றி மக்கள் மகிழ்ந்திருந்தனர்.

அடர்ந்த காடுகளினூடு செல்லும் போது பறவைகளின் சத்தங்களும் வண்டுகளின் ரீங்காரங்களும் மரங்களின் அசைவின் ஓசைகளும், ஆற்றின் சலசலப்புக்களுடன் மூலிகை மரங்களில் இருந்து வெளிவரும் சுத்தமான ஆரோக்கியமான காற்றினை சுவாசிக்கும் அந்த ஓர் உணர்வும் அற்புதமே. பகல்பொழுதுகளில் ஒய்வெடுத்து நடந்தாலும் இரவிலே அனைவரும் ஓரிடத்தில் தான் தூங்கவேண்டும், உடல் அசதியுடன் வெறும் நிலத்தில் ஒரு படங்கை விரித்து தூங்கும் போது மேலே நட்சத்திரங்களுடன் வானம்தான் கூரை, காடுகளே எல்லைச் சுவர்க்கள், மக்களே ஒருவருக்கொருவர் பாதுகாப்பு என்ற உணர்வுடன் குன்றும் குழியுமான அந்த நிலங்களில் அசந்து தூங்குவதும் ஒருவித அனுபவமே.

இவ்வாறு வனங்ககளின் ஊடாக அவற்றை கடந்து மக்கள் எல்லைகளை அடையும் போது கதிர்காம கந்தனை அடைந்துவிட்டோம் என்ற ஓர் உற்சாகம் பிறக்கின்றது. சமய இன மத பேதமின்றி சகோதர உறவுகள் அன்னதானம் வழங்கினார்கள் , தாகசாந்தி அளித்தனர் இவ்வாறு அவர்களால் முடிந்த உதவிகளை இந்த யாத்திரைகளுக்கு செய்கின்ற பல நல்உள்ளங்களையும் தண்ணீர் வசதிகள், சுகாதார சேவைகள், பாதுகாப்பு என பல நிறுவனங்களில் செயற்பாடுகளையும், அரசு திணைக்களங்களின் உதவிகளையும் இங்கு காணக்கூடியதாக இருந்தது. கடந்து வந்த இந்த காட்டுவழி அனுபவங்கள், இடையிடையே இருந்த சிறு கோயில்கள், இயற்கையினை வழிபடல் என்ற பல்வேறு உணர்வுகள் இறை பக்தியுடன் கதிர்காம கந்தனை அடைந்து அருளை பெறும் இந்த பல்லாயிரம் மக்களையும் பார்க்கும்போது கதிர்காமம் என்பது ஒரு சுற்றுலா தளம் போல் மாறிக்கொண்டிருந்தாலும் இந்த யாத்திரை பயணம் அனைவருக்கும் ஓர் முருக பக்தியினையும் ஆன்மீக உணர்வினையும் ஏற்படுத்தியிருந்தது என்பது மறுக்க முடியாத உண்மையாகும்.

கதிர்காமம் – இலங்கையின் ஆன்மீகத் தலைநகர்
ஐந்து முதல் பத்து நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு பக்தர்கள் அடையும் இடம் தான் கதிர்காமம். சிங்கள, தமிழ், முஸ்லிம், பக்தர்கள் ஒரே இடத்தில் வழிபடும் அபூர்வமான தலம் இது. இங்கே முருகன் ‘கதிர்காம தேவனாக’ வணங்கப்படுகிறார். கதிர்காமத்தில் பல்வேறு ஆலயங்கள், புனித மாணிக்க கங்கை, மற்றும் யாத்திரிகளை வரவேற்கும் இடங்கள், எனவும், அத்தோடு இரவில் நடைபெறும் பெரேகராவும் விசேடமான ஒன்றாகும்.

ஏழுமலை – பயணம்
கதிர்காமத்தில் முருகனை வணங்கிய பின், பக்தர்கள் தங்கள் பயணத்தை ஏழுமலை வரை நீட்டிக்கின்றனர். ஏழுமலை (Sella Kataragama) எனப்படும் இடம், கதிர்காமத்திற்கு அருகே இருக்கும் ஒரு பராம்பரியமான ஆலயமாகும். இது முருகனின் சிறிய திருத்தலமாகவும், இங்கு இருக்கும் வேல் சிறப்பம்சமானதாகும், பலர் இந்த வேலுக்கு அவல் பிரட்டி படைத்து அடியவர்களிற்கு கொடுத்து பிராத்தனை செய்வார்கள். ஏழுமலை என்பது ‘ஏழு மலைகள்’ எனும் பொருளில், உயரமான சிறிய மலைகளால் சூழப்பட்ட இடம். இங்கே பக்தர்கள் முருகனை மட்டுமல்லாமல் அவர் சக்தி வடிவங்களையும் வணங்குகிறார்கள்.கதிர்காமம் மற்றும் ஏழுமலை இரண்டையும் சென்று வணங்கும் பக்தர்களுக்கு அந்த ஆன்மீக நிறைவு கூடுதலாக கிடைக்கிறது.

Although many undertake the pilgrimage from places like Jaffna, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa, the journey for most devotees begins at the Ukanthai Murugan Temple. Located in the southern part of the Batticaloa district, along the scenic eastern coastal wilderness, Ukanthai literally means “the beloved place,” and according to legends, it is where Lord Murugan joyfully resides.

Pilgrims worship Murugan here and then commence their spiritual journey on foot. The Meenatchiamman Sametha Subramaniyar Temple, nestled deep within the forest, offers a serene and meditative environment surrounded by untouched nature — a perfect place for spiritual retreat.

Humanity Shining Through the Path and Devotion

Thousands of people walk this sacred route with deep devotion to Murugan. While some undertake the yatra to fulfill vows, others join for adventure, spiritual growth, or simply to experience something extraordinary. Despite the varying intentions, one shared sentiment resonates: the presence of a divine power that protects them along this treacherous jungle path. The cries of “Arohara!” and “Muruga!” echo the inner faith and spiritual surrender of every pilgrim.

The tradition of addressing one another as “Saami” (a divine term) reflects the realization that every living being is a form of the divine. This pilgrimage strips away all societal barriers — caste, creed, religion, wealth, or status — uniting everyone in equality and mutual care. Whatever is given or shared along the way is accepted as a gift from the divine.

The journey brings out the very essence of human kindness. Whether it is the pain in the feet, exhaustion of the body, or hunger, everyone helps each other as needed. Along narrow forest trails, through wild landscapes, barren lands, sandy paths, gushing rivers, and muddy waters — all are crossed with a sense of divine protection and unity.

A Feast of Nature and Togetherness

Pilgrims enjoy wild fruits like palmyra, nelli, and bael, sharing them with each other. Using whatever resources are available, they cook together and dine together — free from the worries of office or home life, living in blissful simplicity.

As they journey through dense forests, the sounds of birds, insects, rustling trees, and flowing streams accompany them. Breathing in the pure, healing air from herbal trees becomes a divine experience. At night, after a day of walking, everyone sleeps in the open, under the stars, with the sky as the roof and forests as walls. With only a mat beneath, and fellow travelers for protection, it is a rare and humbling experience.

Reaching Kathirgamam and Beyond

When pilgrims finally approach Kathirgamam, a wave of joy fills their hearts. Here, people from all communities — Tamil, Sinhalese, Muslim — come together in rare unity to worship. Murugan is venerated here as Kathirgamam Devan. The sacred Manikka Ganga River, various temples, and the grand night-time Perahera (procession) are key highlights of this holy town.

Ezhu Malai – The Final Stretch

After paying homage at Kathirgamam, many devotees continue their journey to Ezhu Malai (Sella Kataragama), a traditional and sacred site nearby. Known as the “Seven Hills,” this serene location is home to a smaller shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan and his symbolic Vel (spear). Devotees offer aval (beaten rice) here and pray for blessings. Along with Murugan, many also worship his divine feminine forms in this tranquil setting.
