ஊருக்கு ஒதுக்குப் புறமாக ஒரு கொடிய விஷமுள்ள பாம்பு வாழ்ந்து வந்தது. ஊர் மக்கள் யாராவது அதன் புற்றின் பக்கம் போனால் சீறி வந்து கொத்தி விடும். பாம்புப் புற்று இருந்த பாதை அந்த ஊருக்கும் பக்கத்து சந்தைக்கும் குறுக்கு வழி. பாம்புக்கு பயந்தே ஊர் மக்கள் பல தொலைவு சுற்றி அந்த சந்தைக்குப் போய் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். வேறு வழியில்லாததால் சலிப்புடனேயே வாழ்க்கையை நடாத்திக் கொண்டிருந்தனர்.
ஒரு நாள் அந்த ஊருக்கு ஒரு யோகி வந்தார். அவர் மிருகங்களிடம் பேசக் கூடிய வரம் பெற்றவர். ஊர் மக்கள் தங்கள் குறையை அவரிடம் முறையிட்டனர். அவர் பாம்பிடம் பேசி அதற்கு ஊர் மக்களை கடிக்கக் கூடாது என்று கட்டளை இட்டு விட்டு பக்கத்து ஊருக்குச் சென்று விட்டார். பாம்பும் அவர் கட்டளைக்குக் கட்டுப்பட்டு நடந்தது.
ஆனால் ஊர் மக்கள் சும்மாயில்லை. வழியே போகும் சிறுவனுக்குக் கூட பாம்பிடம் இருந்த பயம் போய் விட்டது. பாம்பைக் கண்டால் அதைக் கல்லால் அடிப்பது, துன்புறுத்துவது, விரட்டியடிப்பது என்று அதன் வாழ்க்கையை நிம்மதியில்லாமல் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். உடம்பில் பல காயங்களுடன் குற்றுயிரும் குலையுயிருமாகி விட்டது பாம்பு.
யோகி ஒரு நாள் பாம்புப் புற்று இருந்த வழியாக ஊருக்குள் திரும்ப வரும் போது பாம்பின் பரிதாபமான நிலையைக் கண்டு அதனை விசாரித்தார். பாம்பும் நடந்த கதையையெல்லாம் கூறி அழுதது.
யோகி பாம்பைப் பார்த்து “அட முட்டாள் பாம்பே! உன்னை மக்களைக் கடிக்கவேண்டாம் என்றுதானே கூறிச் சென்றேன். பக்கத்தில் வருபவனைப் பார்த்து சீறாதே என்று ஒரு போதும் சொல்லவில்லையே” என்று கேட்டார். இதற்குப் பின் பாம்பும் பிழைத்துக் கொண்டது.

The Foolish Snake & Foolish Humans
In a village on the outskirts of a town, there lived a venomous snake. If anyone from the village came near its anthill, the snake would hiss and bite them.
The path where the snake lived was a shortcut between the village and a nearby marketplace. But out of fear of the snake, the villagers avoided that path and took a long route to reach the market. With no other choice, they carried on with their lives in frustration.
One day, a yogi (saint) visited the village. He had the divine power to speak with animals. The villagers complained to him about the snake.
The yogi went to the snake and commanded it not to bite or harm the villagers. Then he left for the next village. The snake obeyed the yogi’s command.
But the villagers didn’t stay quiet. Even small children lost their fear of the snake. Whenever they saw it, they threw stones at it, teased it, and chased it away. The snake’s life became miserable—it was wounded all over and became weak and lifeless.
One day, the yogi was passing by the same path and saw the snake in a pitiful state. He asked what had happened.
The snake cried and told him everything that had happened since he left.
The yogi looked at the snake and said,
“Oh foolish snake! I told you not to bite people. But did I ever say you shouldn’t even hiss at them to scare them away?”
After that, the snake began to protect itself wisely and lived on.
