International Animal Exchange at Dehiwala Zoo

Under a significant initiative aimed at promoting sustainable wildlife development and strengthening global conservation efforts, the Dehiwala Zoological Garden in Colombo has welcomed several new animals as part of an international animal exchange program.

As part of this initiative, the zoo has received three zebras, two pairs of giraffes, three anacondas from France, several mandarin ducks, and two tortoises. These additions are expected to enrich the zoo’s biodiversity collection and enhance public awareness and understanding of global wildlife species.

In exchange, Sri Lanka has sent native and endemic species such as toque macaques, giant squirrels, elephants, fishing cats, and two venomous snakes (a Green Pit Viper and a Russell’s Viper) to foreign countries.

Zoo officials emphasized that this exchange is not merely for display purposes, but a vital component of global breeding and conservation efforts. The initiative aims to support the survival and reproduction of wildlife species while strengthening cooperation among zoos around the world.

The newly arrived animals are anticipated to become key attractions at the zoo and will also serve an educational purpose by raising awareness about endangered species and the importance of environmental conservation.

As one of South Asia’s oldest zoological gardens, the Dehiwala Zoo is modernizing its operations to meet current global standards. This exchange represents a significant step forward in advancing its mission of sustainable wildlife care and biodiversity conservation.

The new animals are currently adapting to their specially designed habitats and are expected to be opened to the public soon.
