The First Cat to Go to Space
For the first time in history, a cat has been sent into space by France.
In 1963, as part of its space research program, France sent a cat named Félicette into space.
The mission took place aboard a Veronique AG1 rocket and lasted for 13 minutes. Félicette was a calm tuxedo cat, selected from among 14 female cats.
During the flight, it is reported that the cat experienced five minutes of weightlessness. Although Félicette was safely recovered after the journey, she was euthanized two months later so that her brain could be studied for scientific research.
Félicette earned the distinction of being the first cat to travel to space, following Laika, the famous Russian space dog.
Her mission is recognized by international media as a significant milestone in France’s space history.
