Should You Go to the UK for Higher Studies?
The Vice-Chancellor of a leading university in the United Kingdom has expressed dissatisfaction regarding the new tax proposed on international students’ tuition fees.
He stated that this is a wrong policy and would negatively affect the education sector.
He also criticized that it is not beneficial for the long-term interests of the UK.
Pointing out that American universities are facing administrative challenges, he noted that this could be a great opportunity for the UK to become a global destination for international students.
Researchers have indicated that if a 6% tax is imposed, universities in England will incur additional costs exceeding 600 million euros annually, with top institutions such as the University of Manchester being particularly affected.
He added that this extra cost would have to be managed using existing funds.
At a time when many universities are already struggling with financial difficulties, this new tax could create an even more challenging situation, he warned.
The government, however, has stated that the revenue generated from this tax will be used to restore maintenance grants for low-income students.
The UK’s higher education sector is currently facing severe financial challenges.
Due to inflation, the income from domestic students’ tuition fees has decreased, creating a funding gap that universities have been compensating for by relying on higher-paying international students.
However, because of recent immigration and visa policy changes, international student enrollment has declined since 2023.
