Price Controls Introduced for 350 Medicines
To make essential treatments more affordable for the public, price controls have reportedly been announced for 350 types of medicines.
Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, Chairman of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority, stated this while speaking to the media today.
The objective of this initiative is to improve public health by ensuring that medicines are available at regulated prices. As a result, the prices of several important medicines — including those used for treating high blood pressure and cancer — will be significantly reduced, he said.
For example, the price of a vial of Paclitaxel, a drug used in cancer treatment, has been reduced from 42,000 rupees to 26,332.29 rupees. Similarly, the price of Mebendazole 500 mg, used to treat intestinal worm infections, has been reduced from 83 rupees to 50.25 rupees.
He further noted that this pricing mechanism will continue, and new controlled prices will be applied to newly registered medicines as well as those undergoing license renewal.
Additionally, plans are underway to introduce a mobile application that will allow consumers to easily check medicines and their prices. He also warned that legal action will be taken against pharmacies that sell medicines above the maximum retail price.
He emphasized that the public has the right to verify the prices of the medicines they purchase, and pharmacies must strictly comply with the regulated charges.
