Toilet Sold for 375 Crore at Auction
A fully functional toilet sculpture made of 18-carat gold, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, has been sold at an auction for 12.1 million USD, according to international media reports.
The sculpture is titled “America.”
It was created in 2016 and weighs approximately 101 kilograms.
Before the auction, it was installed in the restroom of Sotheby’s headquarters at the Breuer building, allowing potential buyers to view it privately.
This is one of the three gold toilet sculptures created by Cattelan.
One replica was first displayed at the Guggenheim Museum, where over 100,000 visitors stood in line to use it.
Another replica was stolen from Blenheim Palace in 2019.
According to Sotheby’s, the sculpture sold at this auction is the only remaining replica.
The sculpture started at an auction price equal to its gold value — 10 million USD.
Lucius Elliott, head of Sotheby’s Contemporary Art auction division, described the toilet as “a mirror extended toward its viewers.”
Controversial artist Cattelan is considered one of the world’s most famous conceptual artists. One of his biggest and most controversial works is “The Comedian.”
